ams Osram releases 75W edge-emitting laser (EEL) in cost-effective plastic package

The SPL PL90AT03 infrared laser diode has a peak power of 75W and an aperture of 110µm, which is excellent in long-range lidar and time-of-flight (ToF) sensing applications;

• Suitable for 3D sensing applications such as robotics, factory/industrial automation, drones, range finders, smart cities, and smart logistics;

• Economical plastic package suitable for consumer electronics and industrial applications, supporting short pulses between a few ns~100ns.

According to Memes Consulting, ams Osram (SIX: AMS), the world's leading supplier of optical solutions, recently announced that it has launched a 75W edge-emitting laser (EEL) SPL PL90AT03 in a cost-effective plastic package, which is very suitable for Cost-effective consumer electronics applications and industrial applications. This high-performance infrared laser has a high peak output power and an aperture of only 110µm, which provides excellent performance in long-distance ranging applications and is easy to integrate optically.

The new SPL PL90AT03 is housed in an economical plastic package and is an ideal EEL for high-volume applications

Housed in an economical plastic package, the new SPL PL90AT03 is an ideal EEL for high-volume applications. It has cost advantage than traditional TO Can package. Thanks to the most advanced chip technology, SPL PL90AT03 is upgraded to higher efficiency on the basis of the same size as the previous generation SPL PL90 series laser diode. In addition, the SPL PL90AT03 has a narrower emission width and a 50% smaller aperture than its predecessor, making optical design easier.

The single-channel SPL PL90AT03 uses ams Osram's multi-junction technology, where a single laser die consists of three vertically stacked emitters housed in a radial plastic package. This technology enables the laser to generate an optical peak output power of 75W in 30ns pulses at a maximum forward current of 25A. The laser diode can generate short laser pulses ranging from a few ns to 100ns.

The SPL PL90AT03 has a narrow emission area and high optical power output, making it ideal for long-distance ranging applications such as robots, drones, home and factory/industrial automation. In time-of-flight (ToF) sensing and lidar applications, the high-performance SPL PL90AT03 can generate more precise and accurate depth maps for 3D optical sensing and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) systems.

Jouni Riihimaeki, product marketing manager for industrial lasers at ams Osram, said: “The expanding portfolio of high-performance edge-emitting infrared lasers from ams Osram provides new options for customers requiring economical packaging. The combination of other edge-emitting lasers in this series In contrast, the SPL PL90AT03 has a small aperture and high output power while being housed in a radial plastic package suitable for high-volume applications."

Excellent optical performance

The pulsed laser SPL PL90AT03 has a peak wavelength of 905nm and a spectral bandwidth (FWHM) of 5nm. The beam divergence is only 12° (parallel) x 25° (perpendicular), and the small aperture of 110µm enables effective beam shaping.
